Club Penguin Rewritten: Public HTML5 Beta Test Launched (#CPR2020)
For a while now, the Club Penguin Rewritten team have been slowly revealing details about the upcoming HTML5 public beta test. This has now been officially released in a blog post, but I just wanted to give you a run down of what’s going on!
In case you’re unaware, the team are currently migrating the game to a more modern technology. There’s two primary reasons for this:
- In December, Flash (the current technology used) will begin to be retired by browsers. It’s also significantly outdated as it is.
- HTML5 (the more modern technology) will provide the team with more options. This includes mobile support, but they have also confirmed that features such as igloos improvements will be made for the more modern technology. Read more.

Without further ado, here’s how you can test it! You can sign in at the following link on any device, including mobile: https://play.cprewritten.net/2020/
This is really just a test, so a lot of things such as sitting and emotes don’t work yet, and it may feel a bit odd. You can also currently access the following rooms:
- Outdoor: Town, Dock, Snow Forts, Plaza
- Indoor: Coffee Shop, Dance Club, Gift Shop

By testing, you’ll receive an exclusive background! It’ll be added to your inventory automatically as long as you’re not logged in on both the HTML5 version and the Flash version at the same time.
Of course, a lot is being updated and there’s still a while to go! However, it’s pretty amazing to see the rapid progress which the team has made, and the game does play relatively well. It’s also really cool to be able to play on mobile devices!
Above are some more links with more information regarding the HTML5 change, in case you’re interested. I will keep you updated with more information as it’s released, but it’s amazing to be able to finally test it out!

Club Penguin Rewritten to Become Playable on Mobile
Some speculation had built earlier in the month when there was a little hint that Club Penguin Rewritten could become playable on mobile devices in the future. This has now been confirmed by the team.
All of this is to do with the game being migrated to a more modern technology, in which there’ll be an official blog post about soon regarding a public test. The exact details aren’t entirely known yet, but the team have said the first test is “almost ready”.

One of the benefits of us switching to HTML5 and other technologies is CPR will be playable on the majority of phones [and tablets] from release.
-Thorn, Club Penguin Rewritten administratorUpdate (16th July): this is a common question which I wanted to address – this doesn’t necessarily mean an app will be created that’s dedicated to the game. I’d find that to be pretty unlikely. Instead, it’s more likely that this means you will be able to play the game on your default browser.
Currently, some people used third party apps to play the game on mobile devices, but it’ll be pretty cool to have a way to do so officially! In regards to when to expect this, there’s been a bit more shared than “almost ready” lately.
I don’t have a date to share; it’s been worked on pretty much every day though so everyday is a day closer.
-Thorn, Club Penguin Rewritten administratorThere’s been a lot of news on this new HTML5 version lately, but I’ll ensure to keep you updated as more is released!

CP Rewritten: First HTML5 Test “Almost Ready”
Earlier in the week, you may recall that Club Penguin Rewritten unveiled their HTML5 plans in some pretty extensive detail. For those unaware, HTML5 is essentially a different technology which the game will be based on. It’ll provide more opportunities for the team to try new things, and they’ve already confirmed features which will be in this new version.
I would recommend reading the posted linked above regarding first as that goes into more detail about the transition to this new technology. However, the team have now confirmed that the first public beta test is almost ready.
[The HTML5 version] is being worked on; our first public test is almost ready. We already have a name [for the project] and it will be announced in a blog post when the test is live.
-Thorn, Club Penguin Rewritten administratorYou may recall “Club Penguin Rewritten Improvement Project” being used in the past – that name will not be used this time, and a new name for the project will be used instead.
When unveiling their plans, the team did also say that the HTML5 technology would provide the opportunity to offer two versions, with one founded in the current artstyle and another in a more modern style. This has now been confirmed not to be a priority.
Club Penguin Rewritten will always been in its current style. We may at some point open an alternate version which is focused on modern Club Penguin, but that’s not a priority for us.
-Thorn, Club Penguin Rewritten administratorOnce again, it is not known what format this will take. It could be an alternative server, such as Pengur, which was a new server that members of the Club Penguin Rewritten team were working on before it was cancelled a while ago.

The Coffee Shop planned on Pengur before it was scrapped; besides looking beautiful, it demonstrates the modern style nicely, which I hope alleviates confusion It’s also still not exactly known when this will occur; I fully appreciate that “almost ready” and “soon” is language that has previously been used for things that took much longer!
However, I will continue to keep you updated about the new version of Club Penguin Rewritten as more information is released on it. Thank you for reading, waddle on!

Club Penguin Rewritten: Future after Flash Unveiled
For the first time, the Club Penguin Rewritten team have unveiled in extensive detail the direction which the game will take as browsers begins to retire Flash. For those unaware, Flash is the technology on which the game is reliant. There’s quite a few technical terms in this post, so I’ll try to explain.
Effectively, Club Penguin Rewritten will be migrating to a new platform. A lot of this will require recoding/reprogramming how the game works, though there’ll be public tests in-between.

HTML5 will be a slow transition with quite a few public tests in-between. Our main aim is to have basic functionality like rooms, igloos first and then slowly add on other stuff.
-Thorn, Club Penguin Rewritten administratorOn when these public tests will occur, Thorn has stated that they can be expected to occur “soon”. It has been stressed that the transition will be slow and not something that happens overnight; features will be added to the new version that won’t be on the Flash client.
Once it’s released, we will slowly phase out the Flash client and there will be features available in it from release that are different or not available in Flash.
-Thorn, Club Penguin Rewritten administratorAn example of the kind of features to expect to be available on the new version is the more modern igloo system, which is something that has been highly requested as it allows you to save three igloos.
The team have previously said it’s being worked on, but we now know for certain that it won’t be on the Flash version.
Saving igloos and the new igloo system will be available in the HTML5 version from release which we won’t be bringing to the Flash version
-Thorn, Club Penguin Rewritten administratorIt was also stressed that the new technology opens up more opportunities for Club Penguin Rewritten. The team have considered a more modern version of the game, though this could take the form of people being able to switch between the version of their choice. However, that is realistically still a long way off, so please don’t get the impression that things are going to change immediately!
This is pretty significant though as it’s the first time that the Club Penguin Rewritten have gone into detail with their plans for next year, and I’m sure there’s more to be revealed. As always, when it is, I’ll let you know!
